TREEO x ESA BIC Baden-Württemberg: Space Technology Meets Climate Action

At TREEO, our mission is to help cool the planet through transparent, science-based carbon removal. We are happy to share that TREEO has completed its incubation at the ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) Baden-Württemberg – a major milestone validating both our technology and our mission to build a more transparent and scalable voluntary carbon market.

This achievement marks not just the end of an incubation, but the beginning of a new chapter where space technology and nature-based solutions come together to accelerate credible climate action.

Expanding Our Horizons with ESA BIC BW

The ESA BIC Baden-Württemberg program provided an invaluable platform for TREEO to refine and expand our technology. Through the incubation, we integrated advanced remote sensing techniques into our existing monitoring framework, enhancing our ability to scale impact while maintaining scientific transparency.

As ESA highlights, TREEO delivers “voluntary carbon removals of outstanding quality” through its single-tree monitoring solution.

Using the TREEO App, farmers on the ground can measure tree growth and CO₂ removals with high precision. When this reliable ground-truth data is combined with satellite Earth Observation, TREEO can now extend transparent verification across entire regions, bridging the gap between local action and global impact.

Our Collaboration with World from Space

A central part of our ESA BIC journey was the collaboration with World from Space, whose technical expertise was key to realizing our project goals. Together, we developed innovative workflows that combined TREEO’s ground data with high-resolution satellite imagery, specifically leveraging Sentinel-2 and PlanetScope datasets.

Two core objectives guided our work:

  1. Land Eligibility Checks
Using machine learning analysis of multi-year Sentinel-2 vegetation time series, we built models to assess land eligibility and support transparent project initiation.

  2. Forest Gain Monitoring
By integrating satellite imagery with TREEO’s field data, we developed methods to estimate biomass density and monitor forest growth at scale.

This collaboration laid the groundwork for the next evolution of TREEO’s technology – turning precision monitoring into actionable transparency.

The TREEO Impact Storyboard: Turning Data into Trust

Building on these technical achievements, TREEO developed the Impact Storyboard – a digital platform that enables corporate partners to communicate measurable climate and social impact in real time.

This innovation was quickly recognized by forward-thinking companies. STIHL, one of our early adopters, showcased TREEO’s transparency framework in their 2025 Sustainability Report, demonstrating how data-driven impact storytelling can enhance credibility and inspire action across industries.

From Concept to Market-Ready Product

With the support of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the collaboration with World from Space, TREEO transformed from a concept into a market-ready SaaS solution, now used by 14 customers worldwide. This journey strengthened our commitment to scientific rigour and transparency, ensuring that every tonne of carbon removed through TREEO is measured, verifiable, and socially meaningful.

Why This Matters

As demand for credible carbon removals continues to grow, so does the need for verifiable data, scientific rigour, and trust. One of the core challenges of the voluntary carbon market remains the same: how to reliably measure impact at scale without losing accuracy on the ground.

By combining single-tree field data with satellite-based Earth Observation and machine learning, TREEO addresses this challenge directly. Our approach bridges the gap between local, farmer-level measurements and regional-scale verification, enabling climate action that is both precise and scalable.

The collaboration with ESA BIC Baden-Württemberg demonstrates how space technology can strengthen the credibility of nature-based climate solutions — not by replacing local knowledge, but by reinforcing it with independent, data-driven verification. This empowers companies, investors, and communities to act with confidence, knowing that climate impact is not just claimed, but measured and traceable.

Looking Ahead

TREEO presented the final project results to ESA, summarizing the workflows developed during incubation and discussing how these solutions will support TREEO’s future monitoring capabilities. We are deeply grateful to the ESA BIC Baden-Württemberg and World from Space teams for their trust, collaboration, and expertise. This partnership has been more than an incubation — it has been a quality seal of innovation that empowers us to continue building solutions that drive real impact for people and planet
